Details:
The ATC Foundation, in partnership with Equine Pathways Australia (EPA) is embarking on a project to rehome a thoroughbred racehorse for Paralympic qualification. This initiative aims to bridge the world of horse racing with paralympic equestrian sports, showcasing the versatility of thoroughbreds and supporting para-athletes in their Paralympic journey.
Our charity partner, Equine Pathways Australia plays a vital role in using ex-racehorses to assist disabled riders take a step further on from their early work with Riding for the Disabled organisations. EPA riders qualified for the Australian Paralympic team and participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The project unfolds in four key phases:
Phase 1 Explore and commence process – Thoroughbred Selection
Phase 2 Retraining Program
Phase 3 Athlete Selection and Pairing
Phase 4 Paralympic Qualification and beyond
Phase 1 – Thoroughbred Selection
A specific profile is required for our equine athlete. A panel from EPA/ATC Foundation will review and lead the selection of horse. The panel will include a para-dressage coach as well as EPA and ATC Foundation members.
Criteria
- 5 year old plus NSW bred thoroughbred.
- Trained at an ATC track including Royal Randwick, Rosehill Gardens and Warwick Farm
- The Thoroughbred need to be fresh from the track or trainer, with no prior retraining in any other disciplines.
- The ideal candidate will exhibit a trot that shows suspension and a walk with an excellent over track – crucial skills for para-dressage events for our targeted Grade 1, 2 or 3 riders.
While a high-profile racing career isn’t necessary, we’re open to considering elite performers. To ensure we find the perfect match, we’ll collaborate closely with trainers, owners, and trackwork riders across all ATC racecourses in Sydney. They’ll provide comprehensive information, including photos and video footage of the horses in action for us to make a selection.
